working through my working mom guilt

I'm going to be working late this upcoming week, which means that I probably won't be home for dinner at least four of the five nights. So I made some food for the kids. A lot of food. I stockpile food like it's love. Soups, stews with lots of vegetables, pastas of various sizes to accommodate differential mastication ability, and tons of washed, cut fruit. Healthy food. Mom food. I think I do this to make myself feel better. What I will lack in time this week I will make up for with fastidiously labeled Tupperware.

It's kind of odd seeing your handwriting outside of your comics...

Also, are you showing OCD tendencies? Everything is so neatly packaged and neatly labelled! :-)

  2. I know! The labeling is an anesthesia thing. (As well as the OCD.)

  3. haha this is like when Farmer Hoggett's wife leaves town and explains the food in the refrigerator for the cat.

Feel you Michelle. Just got done fastidiously measuring and labeling pumped breast milk for my wee one. Now to try to explain the system to my husband...

  5. I wish my fridge was that neat!

In other comment, your Joy Luck Club reference made me want to eat crab... and read the book, and/or watch the movie. Only two of those is possible right now. Arg.

Seeing that food is making me hungry for healthy food. Your Joy Luck Club movie references make me want to watch the movie again, too!

  8. I tried keeping washed strawberries and raspberries in the fridge but I find they catch mold faster. How do you prevent that?

    Hello Dr. Au or Michelle...

I'm a long time reader, first time poster.

I'm sure you don't need validation from a stranger online, but hopefully you will take no offense at a compliment - you appear to be a wonderful mother, and not just because of the food. :)

I wish we could all learn to let go of the guilt.

Just wanted to make a small suggestion - switching to glass or stainless steel storage containers would be a healthier way of storing all the wonderful, healthy food you prepare.

    Cheers...

Dude, it's totally an Asian thing! Food = love....or, at least, it was in my family ^___^

  11. Beautiful sight to behold. I cleaned my fridge out the other day and filled it with large tupperware containers of fresh cut fruit, etc. It was awesome. (I'm a surgery resident, though, so there was no labeling.)

I love it. I can so see myself doing this when I have kids.

that's an usual sight in my fridge too. :)
just curious, if you are working late, and Joe got paged, who takes care of the kids? Is your nanny a stay-in one?

    two comments from a mother---
    1. Washed berries will mold and rot a lot faster. They should be washed right before they are eaten.

    2. Do you realize how motherly love is disguised in the form of food in many cultures?

I can't believe your fridge is not only that clean but also that sparsely filled (not trying to be negative) How do you not have two week old carry out containers in there? Is there a gnome in their keeping it clean? I want one.

  16. See, that's the sad thing, I cleaned out the fridge so that there would be a clean line of vision for my post-it food labels. IT'S A DISEASE.

don't you have a nanny for Mack? I'm not crazy about having my nanny cook bc i don't like her cooking but certainly she could cut up fruitfor the kids!
