ok fine
So I ordered this dress from J. Crew to wear to the Boards:
It seemed like the chances that I would wear it again were slightly higher if I got a dress rather than a suit, and anyway, it's a pretty cute dress and it was listed in the "work" section, so fine, YOU WIN, AMERICAN COMMERCE. It may need to be altered (there was no petite sizing on this particular dress and I'm only 5'2") but even if it's a little long, whatever, at least it won't be slutty. I have black heels and I have a cardigan, so I'm set--add a yellow beanie and a pot of tea and it'll look straight out of Wellesley in the 1960's.
(I know, I know, there's a V-neck, but don't worry, I have no boobs and therefore no cleavage, the effect would be the same whether the V-neck was in the front or the back.)
i like it! and i agree, much more re-wearable than a suit . . .
ReplyDeleteI like the dress. How do you figure out what size you need? This is the major roadblock keeping me from online shopping delights.
ReplyDeleteyou seem to do a lot of online shopping - how do you know the clothes will fit? sadly, my weirdly shaped body is not conducive to buying clothes w/o trying them on first...
ReplyDeleteUsually I do online shopping from stores where I've shopped at before so I know the fit. But usually the problems in sizing I have are 1.) too long, and 2.) too big in the chest. So I don't order a lot of pants online, and I try to only buy dresses that look like they are cut for the smaller-chested lady.
ReplyDelete(As much as I would like to dress like Joan from Mad Men, it's not going to happen for me.)
I think it's a very cute dress :)
ReplyDeleteLOL at boob/v neck comment. I have the complete opposite problem. I avoid v necks like that because I don't want to provide a free show for everyone!
ReplyDeleteYou're only 5'2"? No way! You seem taller for some reason.
ReplyDeletePost a picture of your final outfit!
ReplyDeleteI have the same dress and am also 5'2", I got it taken in at the shoulders a bunch and it's much better... the V is still way too deep however, so I just wear a camisole under it!
ReplyDeleteFor the deep V-neck, sometimes I see people wearing a nice silk scarf to cover up - if it's done right it looks pretty elegant. Or the cardigan can give enough coverage. The dress is very nice looking, I like the color!
ReplyDeleteI prefer V-necks, even when I do have to wear a camisole under them. I have a big chest, but other kinds of necklines make me look like an over-stuffed couch! So V-neck it is. I think your dress looks great, and I wish you the best on your exam. My boards (much earlier variety than yours) are coming up in June, so I share your stress. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteCute dress, and it suits the occasion. @Anonymous 8:00pm, I, too, am 5'2" and have an off shaped :-) body. I prefer to do the majority of my shopping online because it takes so long to find something that fits. I can try on clothes at my convenience and send them back if they don't fit. ~Flora
ReplyDeleteJ.Crew is the only store I know that fits petite women well. So I trust their online biz.
ReplyDeleteEven if you have no boobs, you definitely should still wear a camisole underneath. You don't want the higher ups to remember you as the woman who wore the V-neck cut waaayyyy down. It is a nice dress though.
