you should probably take your metformin before reading this

Look, I'm not saying that my kids are perfect. They're not. But when it comes to the two of them getting along, they are almost perfect. I assumed that Mack would grow up idolizing Cal, because isn't that what younger brothers do? You know, like Happy and Biff in "Death of a Salesman," only less pugnacious. But what has surprised me is that, as an older brother, Cal is even more in love and delighted with Mack than Joe and I are. Exhibit A: In a pile of Cal's school paperwork that came home this weekend was this, which I can only describe as a love letter.

I think for a kid who just turned five his handwriting is pretty decent and his spelling is at least close to phonetic (or at least phonetic relative to how he thinks words are pronounced) but here, let me provide a translation:

September 3 2010

Hi Mack I love you
I want to have a great time
I want to have a camp out some day
You are fun to play with Mack
I love you love Mack (string of hearts)
Do you????

Mack's favorite things
(Drawing of some kind of wheeled vehicle, an airplane, a ball, and a house)

I swear, this kid just kills me sometimes.

My three year old has a similar love for his 5 month old brother. There is nothing better in this world than a little boy or girl loving a younger sibling. It shows such kindness and compassion. You are a sweet boy, Cal!

  3. So adorable! I think his spelling is amazing at 5! I think he might be saying Mack's "favorite" things? I am so excited for your book! Amy

    Adorable!

Hey Michelle - totally offtopic, but from time to time I like re-reading you scutmonkey comics as most of your fans do I'm sure. But, your 3rd year psych, OBGYN, and surgery comics link back to your old homestead server and I can't access them :( I know you're not a computer person but if you could look into re-uploading them that'd be awesome! Thanks.

  6. I have been having a billing issue with my old Homestead site, but I will look into getting it resolved or else post the comics onto Blogger. Thanks for the input!

  10. Wow, he really does have good handwriting for a 5 year old. I have two sons too. My oldest is 4 and the baby is 10 months. My 4 year old loves his little brother and the little one just adores his big brother. I keep telling myself that they will always be like this... at least I hope!

    That is extremely cute!

Michelle I've been reading your blog since you were in med school (when I was in med school too), and it really just brings home to me how your priorities change - back then all I could think about was the next test, the Krebs cycle, am I going to make a fool of myself in my next surgical tutorial? Now it's really the things outside of work that are important. I am now confident in my ability to keep things reasonably under control at work, but at home is a 7 month old who keeps doing new exciting things while I'm away.

It's nice to read the musings of someone who is in a similar (transatlantic) boat!

  12. The last line of your post was TOTALLY reminiscent of Catcher in the Rye.
