a picture is worth something something

A wordless entry for Joe's birthday (well, mostly wordless), because really, what else is there to say?  Well, except that the kids chose the cake flavor (radioactive strawberry) and the frosting colors (myriad).  COULD YOU TELL?

Happy birthday, Joe!  You're one of the good ones, and we love you.

Edited to add: not achieved through some sort of crazy photo trickery, but indeed those birthday candles are burning with different colored flames. (The effect probably would have looked more dramatic with the lights out, but oh well, maybe next time we'll have our party at night or, at the very least, not in front of a window.)  I figure there must be some sort of inorganic additive in the filament--Chemistry wonks can probably help me with this--but the kids thought it was pretty awesome.

  5. I believe they are Magnesium, Sodium and other alkaline metals. (Alkali or alkaline? I'm not sure which one. My husband is SO ashamed of me right now.)

  6. I think the cake looked awesome, cranked up to 11. And considering Mack's 3, I think it's something to note that the icing colours haven't been overworked to homogenization. Way to go, guys!

  8. Technicolor goodness! Hey, do you cut off the top of the cake on the bottom layer, to make the two come together more smoothly? So many conflicting opinions on this one. -- A longtime fan, New Yorker, and wife of P&S grad.

  9. Nah, just put a frosting layer between and slapped them together.

Also, we're going to be eating that rainbow cake for the rest of the week if anyone wants to come over and help...

  14. Oh man, this looks so fun! I like to cook w/ my toddlers, but since they are so messy I forbid them from doing the fun stuff. I am a MS1, soon to be an MS2, interested in anesthesiology. I was just wondering whether you ever get bored during the long cases, or what you do to entertain yourself? Thanks!

It is so nice to get the kids involved in preparing the birthday cake for their Dad. It makes the colorful cake so much more meaningful as an expression of all your love for him. Make sure they do the same for your birthday.
We will be leaving for China on May 19th and returning on June 4th. Take care and have a wonderful Memorial weekend.
